BERENICE VAN DER VELDEN
At her heart, it's notable that Berenice is not a bad person, or even a particularly selfish one. Overwhelmingly goal driven, of course -- but if she was selfish, she could have easily stayed in the care of her family, with wealth aplenty. By choosing this path, by willingly giving up what could have been an easy life in search of punching aliens in the face with a giant metal fist, an incredibly unladylike profession if there was any, she forgoes her name in 'polite' society. Her mother, a fashion editor, is nearly driven to palpitations by the idea that her youngest is running around in the military.
